How Prop Trading Works: You Bring the Skill, the Firm Brings the Capital

Let me ask you something, and I’d like an honest answer. What’s stopping you from trading seriously?

Is the problem confidence? Knowledge? Or the capital you don’t have yet?

If you’ve followed this module from Chapter 1, knowledge is becoming less of an excuse. You know what forex and CFDs are. You measure moves in pips and turn pips into dollars. You know which markets suit your personality, which hours bring the volume, and why leverage deserves respect. Confidence comes with practice and a good process.

Capital is the stubborn one. Remember Chapter 5? A sensible trader risks around 1% per trade. On a $1,000 account, a 1% risk is $10. Even a great month of 5% brings in $50. Enough for a pizza. Not enough for a career. For years, capital was the wall between skilled traders and meaningful returns. Then prop firms opened a door in the wall.

Welcome to the final chapter of Module 1. Today, you’ll learn what a prop firm is, how evaluations and funded accounts work, how profit splits and payouts reach you, and how to tell a credible firm from a flashy website with a countdown timer.

Part 1: What Is a Prop Firm?

“Prop” is short for proprietary. Traditionally, proprietary trading meant a bank or fund trading with its own money instead of clients’ money. The best traders on those desks managed millions, and they got there by proving themselves on smaller amounts first.

Modern prop firms bring a version of this model to retail traders. The deal looks like this:

You pay a one-time fee for a challenge. You trade a simulated account under set rules, such as a profit target, a daily loss limit and a maximum loss. You show consistent, disciplined performance.  You earn a share of the profits your trading generates.

Notice the word “simulated.” At Moneta Funded, as with most prop firms, accounts use simulated capital in a live market environment. Prices, spreads and execution follow the real market, and your payouts are real money. The account balance itself is not a deposit sitting in your name.

So what’s the firm’s side of the deal? The firm earns from challenge fees and from its share of profits made by successful traders. A firm wants you to succeed, because funded traders who stick to the rules keep the model running.

You bring the skill. The firm brings the capital.

Part 2: Prop Trading vs Retail Trading

A fair question from any student: “Professor, if I already trade with my own account, why switch?”

Let’s compare the two side by side.

Capital: in retail trading, you use your own savings. In prop trading, you trade the firm’s simulated capital. What you risk: in retail, your whole account. In prop trading, the challenge fee.
Account size: in retail, limited by your savings. In prop trading, accounts from $5,000 up to $100,000, and on Moneta Funded’s Phoenix Instant, scaling up to $2,000,000.
Profit: in retail, you keep 100% of profits and absorb 100% of losses. In prop trading, you share profits under a split, and a losing month doesn’t cost you more than your fee.
Rules: in retail, only your own discipline. In prop trading, fixed risk rules, enforced automatically.

Retail trading isn’t a bad choice. Some traders prefer full control and no rules. But look at the risk line again. A beginner who funds a retail account with $10,000 of savings puts the full $10,000 at risk. The same beginner in a prop challenge risks the fee.

Now for the honest part. A challenge fee is still money, and many traders fail their first challenge. The most common reason isn’t bad analysis. The most common reason is breaking the daily loss limit with an oversized trade. Sound familiar? Chapters 2 and 5 showed you exactly how this happens.

Part 3: Who Benefits Most?

Beginners. A demo account teaches you the buttons, but nothing changes when you lose. A prop challenge adds real stakes without putting your savings on the line. You learn to respect a daily loss limit, to size positions properly, and to trade with a plan. These habits carry into every account you’ll ever trade.

Intermediate traders. You’ve built a strategy that works on a small account, and small accounts produce small returns. The same strategy on a $100,000 account produces returns 100 times larger than on a $1,000 account, with the same percentage performance.

Experienced traders. You’ve got the edge, the discipline and the track record. Even so, every trader has bad weeks. Why keep your personal wealth exposed when you scale with a firm’s capital and keep your own savings separate?

Part 4: How Challenges Work

Think of a prop challenge like a video game. You pick the game mode which suits your style, you learn the rules, and you play smart. Break a rule, and the game ends. Hit the target and you move to the next level.

Here’s how the main challenge types work, using Moneta Funded as the example.

The evaluation route

One-Step Challenge: one phase, a 10% profit target, a 3% daily loss limit and a 6% static max loss. Built for traders who want the fastest evaluation route to funding. Two-Step Challenge: a 5% target in Phase 1 and 10% in Phase 2, with a 5% daily loss limit and a 10% static max loss. Built for traders who prefer more room across two phases.

Both require at least 3 profitable days of 0.5% or more (3 per phase on the Two-Step), and neither has a consistency rule. Pass, and you receive a funded account.

The instant route

Skip the evaluation entirely. You trade under funded account rules from day one.

Instant Funding: 3% daily loss limit, 5% trailing max loss and a 15/20% consistency rule. The most affordable way in.
Instant Funding Pro: 4% daily loss limit, 8% trailing max loss, news trading allowed, and your first payout on demand. Built for experienced traders.
Phoenix Instant: 3% daily loss limit and 6% static max loss, with scaling at every 10% profit milestone, up to $2,000,000.

The fast route

Sprint Challenge: challenges lasting 1 to 8 hours, with profit targets from 0.6% to 3%, 2X and 5X formats, and payouts up to 100%. Built for fast-paced traders chasing a short-term opportunity. Remember the session lesson from Chapter 4? Timing your Sprint matters.

Quick check before we move on. You’re a patient swing trader who holds trades for a few days and hates rushing. Which option fits you worst?

The Sprint. A few hours leaves no room for a strategy built on patience. The Two-Step or Phoenix Instant suits your style far better.

Part 5: Profit Splits, Explained

Once you’re funded, profits get shared between you and the firm. The share you keep is the profit split.

Splits vary by challenge type and account. On Moneta Funded, splits go up to 88% on standard accounts, and the Sprint Challenge offers payouts of up to 100%. Always check the exact split for the account you buy.

Let’s run the numbers. Suppose you trade a $10,000 funded account and make 5% in a payout period. Your profit is $500. At an 88% split, you keep $440. The firm keeps $60.

Scale the same 5% to a $100,000 account, and your $440 becomes $4,400. Same skill. Same percentage. Bigger account.

Part 6: How Payouts Reach You

A profit split means nothing if you never see the money. So how does the process work on Moneta Funded?

The standard payout cycle is 14 calendar days. Payout requests take 1 to 2 business days to process. On Instant Funding Pro, your first payout is available on demand.

You choose how to receive the money:

Rise, for bank and crypto payouts; Crypto, through USDT on TRC20 or USDC on ERC20; or transfer to a Moneta Markets trading account

Part 7: How to Choose a Credible Prop Firm

The prop industry has grown fast, and not every firm deserves your money. Flashy marketing and a 50% discount banner prove nothing. Before you buy any challenge, check these five things.

Rule transparency: Every rule, from the daily loss limit to news trading restrictions, should be written clearly before you pay. Hidden rules exist to fail you.
Execution quality: Wide spreads and slow fills make targets harder to hit. Look for a firm with serious trading infrastructure behind the platform.
Payout track record: Look for published payout figures, independent reviews and clear processing times.
Payment and payout methods: Recognised payment providers and multiple payout options are a good sign.

Who stands behind the firm. How long has the firm operated? Who runs the firm? Is a regulated broker involved?
The last point matters more than beginners realize. A growing number of prop firms now partner with established brokers to close this trust gap. Moneta Funded is backed by Moneta Markets, which gives traders institutional-grade execution and a broker with a track record behind the firm.

Your Module 1 Graduation

Take a moment. Six chapters ago, you scrolled past a Lamborghini reel and wondered what those people were trading. Now you know how prices move, what every pip costs, which markets fit your style, when to trade, how leverage works, and how prop firms turn skill into funded capital.

Knowledge was the first barrier. Capital was the second. You’ve got the tools to handle both.

Up Next: Module 2

Stay tuned, because Module 2 moves you from theory to the trading screen. The first chapter covers the three order types every trader uses: market orders, limit orders and stop orders. You’ll learn when each one fills, why a limit order gives you price control but no guarantee, and why a stop order becomes a market order once triggered, sometimes at a worse price than you planned. Every rule you studied today depends on placing the right order at the right price, so get ready for your first lesson at the controls. See you in Module 2.
