Understand the Risk of Ruin, and Why 5 Losses in a Row Happen

Statistics teachers love an old classroom trick. Half the class flips a real coin 100 times and writes down the results. The other half invents 100 flips out of their heads. The teacher leaves the room, comes back, and picks out the fake lists in seconds.

How? The fake lists never have long streaks. People who invent coin flips switch between heads and tails too often, because six tails in a row “looks wrong.” Real coins produce runs like six or seven tails all the time.

Your trading results behave like the real coin, not the invented one. So when five losses arrive in a row, most traders decide the strategy is broken, the market has changed, or the firm is against them. Usually, none of these is true. Today you’ll learn the math of losing streaks, what risk of ruin means, how your position size decides whether a streak bruises you or ends you, and how to tell a normal streak from a broken strategy.

Part 1: Your Brain Is Bad at Randomness

Let’s start with numbers. Take a strategy which wins exactly half its trades, like a coin. Over 100 trades, how likely is a run of at least five losses in a row?

Most students guess somewhere around 10% or 20%. The real answer is 81%. Here’s the full picture, worked out across 100 trades.

Win rate5+ losses in a row7+ losses in a row10+ losses in a row
60%46%9%0.6%
50%81%32%4%
40%98%69%21%

Read the 40% row slowly. A trader who wins 40% of the time is almost certain to see five straight losses in 100 trades, and has better than even odds of seeing seven. The typical longest losing streak for this trader over 100 trades is seven or eight trades.

Now the twist. A 40% win rate isn’t a bad strategy. Remember Module 2, Chapter 2? At a 2:1 reward to risk ratio, a trader breaks even at about 33%. At 40%, the strategy makes money over time. The same strategy also produces painful streaks along the way. Both facts are true at once.

Part 2: Why Streaks Happen to Good Strategies

Every trade is a fresh event. The market doesn’t remember your last four losses, and your fifth trade doesn’t become more likely to win because you’re “due.” Gamblers call this belief the gambler’s fallacy, and the belief has emptied a lot of wallets.

A win rate is a long-run average. Over 1,000 trades, a 50% strategy wins close to 500. Over any ten trades, the result might land anywhere from two wins to eight. Wins and losses arrive in clumps, not in a neat alternating pattern.

So the question isn’t whether a losing streak will come. The question is whether your account is built to survive one.

Part 3: What Risk of Ruin Means

Risk of ruin is the probability your account hits its floor before you reach your goal. On a prop challenge, ruin means a breach, and the goal means the profit target.

Four things decide your risk of ruin:

  • Win rate, how often you win
  • Reward to risk ratio, how much you win compared with how much you lose
  • Risk per trade, the share of the account each loss costs
  • Distance to the floor, how much room you have left

You’ve spent months working on the first two. The last two are set by you and your account rules, and they move the odds faster than any strategy tweak.

Part 4: The Same Strategy, Four Position Sizes

Let’s run an experiment. Take one strategy: a 40% win rate at a 2:1 reward to risk ratio. Put the strategy on a challenge with a 10% profit target and a 5% static maximum loss. Simulate thousands of attempts at four risk levels, and count how often the trader hits the target before the floor.

Risk per tradeLosses to reach the floorChance of passing
0.5%1086%
1%565%
2%355%
5%140%

Same trader. Same strategy. Same edge. Changing only the position size moves the pass rate from 40% to 86%.

Why? At 5% risk, one losing trade ends the challenge, and this trader loses 60% of the time. At 0.5%, the account survives ten straight losses, which happens only about one time in five over 100 trades. The edge needs enough trades to show up, and small size buys those trades.

One caution: this simulation ignores the daily loss limit, spreads and slippage, all of which push the real numbers lower. The pattern stays the same.

Part 5: Building an Account Which Survives the Streak

Here’s the practical rule. Count your room in losses, not in dollars. Divide your room to the floor by your risk per trade.

On a $10,000 account with a 5% maximum loss, a 1% risk gives you five losses of room. Look back at the streak table. For a 50% strategy, five losses in a row arrive in 81% of 100 trade runs. Five losses of room isn’t much of a cushion.

A few habits stretch the cushion.

  • Start a new challenge at 0.5% risk, and move to 1% only once you have profit behind you.
  • After three losses in a row, halve your risk until you post a winning day, as Chapter 1 suggested.
  • On a trailing account, count your room from today’s floor, not from the starting balance, as Chapter 3 showed.
  • Plan for your worst streak, not your average one. If your journal shows a seven trade losing streak last year, your account needs room for at least eight.

Part 6: Is My Strategy Broken, or Is This Normal?

Every trader in a streak asks this question. Four checks give you an honest answer.

Sample size. Ten trades prove nothing. Judge a strategy over at least 50 trades, preferably 100.

Rule-following. Open your journal. Did you follow your plan on every losing trade? If the losses came from broken rules, the strategy isn’t the problem. You are, and the fix is discipline, not a new indicator.

The streak’s length. Compare the streak to the table. A five trade streak at a 40% win rate is ordinary. A fifteen trade streak deserves a closer look.

Market conditions. A trend strategy suffers in a sideways market. Ask whether the market changed, not whether the strategy suddenly stopped working.

If all four checks come back clean, the right move is often the most boring one: keep trading the plan at a smaller size.

Pop Quiz

Your strategy wins 50% of its trades. Over your next 100 trades, how likely is a run of at least six losses in a row? Pick one: 5%, 25% or 55%.

The answer is 55%. A run of six straight losses is more likely than not. Bonus question: you risk 1% on an account with a 5% maximum loss. Does a six trade streak breach the account? Yes, on the fifth loss. At 0.5%, the same streak costs 3% and leaves you with two percent of room and a strategy still in the game. If you picked 55%, give yourself a gold star.

Why This Matters on a Moneta Funded Account

The One-Step Challenge asks for a 10% profit target with a 5% maximum loss and no time limit. No clock means no pressure to rush. A trader at 0.5% risk needs more trades to reach the target, and the challenge gives you all the time you need to take them. Trade small, let the edge play out across many trades, and let the streak math work for you instead of against you.

Up Next: Chapter 5

Stay tuned, because the final chapter of Module 3 deals with what happens inside your head after a losing streak. You’ll learn how revenge trading and overtrading start, why the urge to “win it back” is the most expensive feeling in trading, and how to use a simple tilt reset routine to stop a bad hour from turning into a breached account. The math in this chapter only protects you if you stay calm enough to follow it. See you in class.
